Honey: an antimicrobial product
In addition to all the other health-promoting properties of honey, a recent study linked it to antimicrobial action against periodontal pathogens.
In particular, the researchers examined and compared the antibacterial activity of honey with the corresponding activity of 0.2% chlorhexidine against some microbes in the oral cavity. The study involved 66 volunteers aged 20-24 years and their plaque scores were examined on day one and day four. The result was that the “honey mouth rinses” were able to inhibit the growth of the 6 oral cavity microbes tested in the laboratory. Also “honey mouth rinses”, as well as chlorhexidine mouth rinses, were both able to reduce the formation of microbial plaque in the mouth. For more information read the article summary
