Trigeminal neuralgia
The trigeminal nerve is the main aesthetic nerve that innervates the face. The pain in trigeminal neuralgia has very special features. The pain is very strong, it appears suddenly and stops suddenly. It lasts from 2 seconds to 2 minutes at the beginning, but with the progression of the disease it can last up to 2 hours. It is caused by a simple touch of the face: shaving, brushing teeth, washing the face, eating or even just talking. As a result patients avoid all simple daily activities for fear of pain.
Trigeminal neuralgia may be caused due to pressure on the nerve at various points along its path from the brain to the periphery and is characteristic of older ages. But it can also be the first symptom of other diseases, especially if it appears at a young age, when the disease is not typical. When it occurs at a young age, the dentist should suspect causes such as multiple sclerosis and a brain tumor that is pressing on the nerve.
